Violent Shootout Kills 22 Suspected Gang Members Southwest Of Mexican Capital

A bloody shootout erupted in a Mexican town southwest of the capital city early Monday morning, leaving 22 suspected gang members dead and injuring one government soldier.

The gunfight broke out in the village of Tlatlaya, southwest of Mexico City, in the early hours of Monday when government soldiers in the area came under fire from the suspected gang members. The shootout lasted several minutes and resulted in the deaths of 22 people, 21 men and one woman.

In an official statement by the Mexican Defence Ministry all of the victims in the shooting were reported to have been gang members, slightly lightening the atmosphere that had began to surround one of the bloodiest shootouts with security forces since President Enrique Pena Nieto took power on 1 December 2012.
