Herve Gourdel, the French citizen captured by Algerian Islamic State-allied jihadist group Jund al-Khilafa, has been beheaded in Algeria. France has confirmed the authenticity of the video.
Captured French hostage Herve Gourdel has been beheaded in a video released by Islamic State-allied Algerian jihadist group Jund al-Khilafa. The group executed the French mountaineer, who had been kidnapped while out with friends in a tourist area popular with French citizens, after the European country failed to stop their air strikes against the Islamic State within the given 24 hour period.
François Hollande, the president of France, condemned the killing as a “cruel and cowardly” act. He also stated that air strikes against the terror threat in Iraq and Syria would continue. The killing by Jund al-Khilafa causes concerns for the international community, who have been attempting to combat the jihadist threat posed by the Islamic State, because it is the first beheading by a group – although affiliated to the Islamic State – outside of Iraq and Syria.
The attack displays increasing strength by the self-declared Islamic caliphate, alongside their Algerian allies, increasing the need for action against the group. Jund al-Khilafa (Soldiers of the Caliphate) declared allegiance to IS on 14 September, after breaking away from al-Qaeda.
