At least 45 people are feared dead, with another 50 injured, after a suicide bomber targeted a crowded volleyball match in eastern Afghanistan.
A suicide bomber has attacked a volleyball match in eastern Afghanistan, killing at least 45 people and injuring more than 50 others. Hundreds had gathered to watch an inter-district volleyball tournament final in the Yahyakhail district of the country’s east, when the suicide bomber detonated.
The bomber was believed to have been on foot when the attack occurred. He was mixing with the crowd. Official reports of the death toll vary between 40 and 45 confirmed deaths, with the latter more commonly being cited.
Mokhis Afghan, spokesman for the provincial governor of Paktika province – which borders Pakistan – told press, the attack is believed to have been the result of a recent increase in Taliban activity. This increase correlates with the withdrawal of western troops from the country by the end of the year.
