A suicide bomb attack has killed at least 33 people in central Yemen, after detonating at a busy cultural centre in the city of Ibb.
At least 33 people are dead after a suicide bomber detonated explosives at a busy cultural centre in the central Yemeni city of Ibb, according to medical sources.
Students at the centre were celebrating Prophet Mohammad’s birthday when the attack occurred. Many of the victims were believed to have been Houthis – a group of rebel Shi’ite Muslims that have been involved in numerous, violent clashes with the government in recent months.
No group has claimed responsibility in the past, but the al-Qaeda wing in Yemen has targeted the group in the past.
At least 20 bodies, including women and children, were transferred to al-Thawra hospital in the city of Ibb, while 13 more bodies were taken to another hospital called al-Manar.
The provincial governor was reported to be among a number of people wounded in the attack, local residents told press.
