At least one student has been killed, and a further 14 wounded, after gunmen attacked the American University of Afghanistan campus, in the Afghan capital, Kabul.
At least one student was killed and 14 wounded when gunmen attacked the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul on Wednesday, the head of the city’s hospitals, Mohammad Saleem Rasouly, told Reuters.
A large explosion was reportedly heard earlier, and ongoing gunfire has been described by students, who remain barricaded inside the campus. Many of the students remained trapped in classrooms.
There have been conflicting reports surrounding the perpetrators of the attack, with local police saying they believe one assailant is responsible, while an interior ministry official earlier said he thought several gunmen, some with suicide vests, were involved.
The attack comes two weeks after two university staff – one American, one Australian – were kidnapped by unknown gunmen. Their whereabouts remain unknown.
