Over 100 People Trapped In French Alps Cable Cars

At least 110 people are understood to be trapped in cable cars, over the Mont Blanc massif, in the French Alps, with a rescue operation underway, French officials have said.

French officials say 110 people are trapped in cable cars over the Mont Blanc massif in the Alps. The mayor of Chamonix, Eric Fournier, said the people were being evacuated by helicopter.

“There’s nothing fundamentally to fear,” he added.

Fournier, who spoke to BFM-TV, said the Italian authorities were helping with the rescue. It is not yet clear what caused the cable cars to stop working.

A local police official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the 110 people trapped were in the Vallee Blanche cable car, which rises to an altitude of 3,778 metres (12,395 feet).

The cable car connects the famed Aiguille du Midi peak to the Pointe Helbronner and takes 30 minutes.
