For Hamburg winger Nicolai Muller scoring eight minutes into his side’s 1-0 win over Augsburg probably felt amazing, at least until he ruptured a knee ligament in the celebration.
The 29-year-old former Mainz player, who joined Hamburg in 2014, now faces seven months on the sidelines after the freak accident.
After opening the scoring in Saturday’s win, Muller performed a series of helicopter whirls before launching himself into a jump as he punched the air.
One awkward landing later and he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, with his club confirming that he will be out of action for “approximately seven months”.
Hamburg head coach Markus Gisdol told reporters it was “certainly a downer, I have never experienced anything like it before”.
