At least 17 people are now believed to have been killed, and more injured, after a school shooting in the US state of Florida. The shooting occurred at the Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
School superintendent Robert Runcie had previously told reporters: “there are fatalities involved here.”
Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel confirmed the new death toll.
Local media has reported that the shooter, who is now in custody, is a 19-year-old former student.
Some of the outlets named him as Nikolas Cruz, who was understood to have been expelled from the school in the past.
One student was quoted as saying “everybody predicted this”, describing in an interview that the suspect was well known for being a troubled kid.
He was armed with an AR-15 rifle and had “countless magazines”. The shooting spree began outside the school and continued inside.
The suspect reportedly pulled the fire alarm and caused chaos in the school before he started shooting, law enforcement officers told reporters at the scene.
