Dozens have died in a number of individual bombings in Iraq over the course of the weekend. One blast killed a police chief in Iraq’s Anbar region while another series of blasts killed 22 Kurdish veterans northeast of Baghdad.
Captured British citizen Alan Henning is believed to have been beheaded by Islamic State militants, following the release of a video purporting to show his killing.
Herve Gourdel, the French citizen captured by Algerian Islamic State-allied jihadist group Jund al-Khilafa, has been beheaded in Algeria. France has confirmed the authenticity of the video.

A series of deadly car bomb attacks has rocked the city of Kirkuk in northern Iraq, killing 18 people. Several also injured in an attack in Erbil, the capital of the Iraqi Kurdish region.
Militants from the Islamic State, or ISIS as they’re also known, have seized the town of Qaraqosh, Iraq’s largest entirely Christian town and have driven out all residents.
The Islamic State, the name currently being used by ISIS’s caliphate, has seized control of another oilfield, Iraq’s largest dam and a number of towns and villages in Northern Iraq following fierce fighting between the militia and Kurdish forces.

Iraqi Kurdish President Calls For Parliament To Prepare Independence Vote In Response To Baghdad Indecisiveness
The president of Iraq’s Kurdish region, Massoud Barzani, asked his lawmakers to establish preparations for an independence vote after Kurdish patience was worn thin after more unhurried displays of parliament indecisiveness in Baghdad.
An Iraqi military helicopter has crashed during an assault on the rebel-held settlement of Tikrit, a city of around 260’000. Reports state that the vehicle crashed after taking heavy gunfire from rebels in the area.
